Helen Herrman
Helen is a psychiatrist and public health physician who has experience of clinical, research and service development work in several settings in Melbourne and overseas. She is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at Orygen and Centre for Youth Mental Health, The University of Melbourne, Australia, and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre in Mental Health, Melbourne. She is past president of the World Psychiatric Association (2017-2020), and the International Association of Women's Mental Health. She has received the award of Officer of the Order of Australia, and an honorary doctor of medical science at The University of Melbourne.
Previously Professor and Director of Psychiatry in St. Vincent's Health Melbourne, Australia, her research and practice interests include community mental health care, promoting mental health and women's mental health. She led the WPA's action plan 2017-2020, concerned with supporting the contribution of psychiatrists to global mental health. She hopes to build on this background of working with professional and community partners to support the work of the CRE.
She looks forward to working with professional and community partners in the CRE to promote mental health and well-being, especially for women and men living with adversity.
Helen brings to the CRE her experience of collaborative working and integrated support in each setting for mental health, general health and social connection.
Helen is a non-indigenous Australian who lives and works in Melbourne on Wurundjeri Country and also spends time on the Bellarine Peninsula near Melbourne where Wadawurrung People are the Traditional Custodians of the land, waters and sea, and have been for thousands of generations.
Helen enjoys connections with family and friends, and time to enjoy music and books, as well as the beach and bush.
